The $588 Campaign That Produced Zero Leads (and Almost Nobody Noticed)
β
This week's issue is about the least glamorous thing we do for clients β and honestly, one of the most profitable: checking where the money actually goes.
Here are three campaigns from one account we manage (a landscaping & outdoor construction company), July 1β21:
- π Campaign A: $267 spent β 59 leads β $4.53 per lead
- πΈ Campaign B: $588 spent β 30 clicks β ZERO leads
- π Campaign C: $1,476 spent β 12 leads β $123 per lead
Read that again. The campaign producing nothing got more than twice the budget of the one producing leads at under $5.
No error message. No disapproved ads. No red flag in the interface. Campaign B was running "fine" β spending smoothly, getting clicks, looking busy. It just wasn't producing a single lead.
WHY THIS HAPPENS TO ALMOST EVERYONE
Google Ads will happily spend whatever you give it. And most automated budget tools make it worse β they pace your budget so you don't overspend, but pacing spreads money evenly. Pacing doesn't know which campaign deserves the money.
In this account, while Campaign B quietly burned $588, the $4.53-per-lead winner had its daily budget cut by more than half. The account was "on budget" the whole time. That's the trap: on budget is not the same as well spent.
THE 10-MINUTE CHECK THAT CAUGHT IT
Once a week, we pull one boring report: every campaign, spend vs. conversions, month to date. That's it. No dashboards, no AI magic β a table with three columns.
Then we apply three rules:
- 1. Every test gets a deadline. Campaign B was a strategy test with a two-week window. The window closed, the results didn't show up β so the budget moves. Hope is not a strategy.
- 2. Reallocate before you add. Before anyone spends a dollar more, fix the distribution. Moving Campaign B's budget to Campaign A buys ~130 more leads per month at zero extra cost.
- 3. Feed the winner. The scariest waste isn't the loser spending money β it's the winner being starved while it happens.
That's the whole system. It's not sexy. It works.
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
Open your Google Ads account. Campaigns tab. Set the date range to this month. Sort by cost. Now look at conversions next to each number.
If a campaign has meaningful spend and zero (or near-zero) conversions β and it's been running for more than two weeks β you've found your $588. Move it to your best performer today.
Want us to run this check on your account every single week so you never have to think about it? We take on 1β2 new clients per month.

TOOL OF THE WEEK
None of this works if you can't tie leads back to campaigns. CallRail tracks exactly which campaign (and keyword) made your phone ring β it's how we know Campaign A's 59 leads were real calls and bookings, not vanity clicks.
