The Google Ads mistake that shut down 3 businesses
Last week, I got off a call with a new client , a local service business, and they said something that made my jaw drop.
Their old ad provider told them they “couldn’t run Google Ads anymore because they didn’t have the authority to.”
What they really meant?
They were running ads for multiple, unrelated businesses inside the same Google Ads account.
That’s not just sloppy. It’s a direct violation of Google’s policies.

Know What the Policies Are
Here’s why this is such a serious issue:
- Google does not allow multiple unrelated businesses to be managed under a single Ads account
- When Google catches this, they don’t pause one campaign, they shut down everything
- Every business under that account gets hit at once
- The business owners often have no idea what’s happening because they don’t have admin access
In this case, multiple businesses were shut down overnight.
The scariest part?
The owner had zero visibility into their own ad account.
No access to billing.
No access to history.
No access to data.
They were completely locked out.
The good news?
Their actual business account hadn’t been penalized yet.
So we were able to:
- Create a clean Google Ads account under their ownership
- Set it up correctly from day one
- Avoid any long-term damage to their ad history
But this could’ve gone very differently.
Here’s the lesson I want you to take away:
You should always own your Google Ads account.
Agencies and freelancers (including me) should be:
- Granted access
- Never given ownership
If someone controls your account, they control:
- Your data
- Your billing
- Your ability to advertise
And if something goes wrong?
You’re the one paying for it.
